Small-Cap Momentum Basics

What small-cap momentum trading is, why these stocks move fast, and the core vocabulary: float, volume, catalysts, and liquidity. Start here before anything else.

Small-cap momentum trading focuses on lower-priced stocks with small public floats that can move 20%, 50%, or more in a single session when volume surges.

The engine of every move is supply and demand. A small float means relatively few shares are available to trade, so a burst of buying pressure can push the price sharply higher. Volume confirms the move: a stock up 40% on thin volume is far less trustworthy than one up 40% on ten times its average volume.

A catalyst is the reason behind the move — news, a contract, an FDA decision, or sometimes just attention. Your job is not to predict catalysts but to recognize which ones the market cares about, and to manage risk when you are wrong. Most momentum trades fail; the edge comes from cutting losers quickly and letting the occasional big winner pay for them.
