Pre-Market Preparation Routine
A repeatable morning routine: building a watchlist, checking news and filings, marking key levels, and writing a trade plan before the opening bell.
Professional momentum traders do most of their decision-making before the market opens. A solid pre-market routine takes 30 to 60 minutes and removes most of the impulsive decisions that destroy accounts.
Start with a gap scanner: stocks up significantly pre-market on unusual volume. For each candidate, check the news or filing behind the move, note the float and average volume, and mark pre-market highs and lows as your first reference levels.
Then write the plan in plain language: under what conditions would you enter, where is your stop, and what is your target? If the market never offers your setup, doing nothing is the correct trade. The routine ends with one more check — position sizes calculated from your planned risk, never from how confident you feel.
