Position Sizing Guide
The math that keeps you in the game: calculating share size from planned risk and stop distance, and why sizing is more important than stock picking.
Position sizing is the most underrated skill in trading. Two traders can take the exact same setups with the exact same win rate, and the one with better sizing will dramatically outperform — because sizing determines how much the losers cost.
The formula is simple: shares = planned dollar risk ÷ (entry price − stop price). Risk $50 on a trade with a $0.40 stop distance, and you buy 125 shares. The math never changes; only the inputs do. This removes emotion from the decision entirely.
The most common sizing mistake is going bigger after wins and smaller after losses — the exact opposite of what works. Fixed fractional risk (the same small percentage of the account per trade) keeps one bad day from becoming a blown account. Your edge is not just your setups; it is surviving long enough for the setups to pay.
