EMA 9 Strategy Guide
The 9-period exponential moving average as an intraday trend filter: how to read it, pullback entries, and what it means when price loses it.
The 9 EMA is one of the most watched intraday moving averages in small-cap momentum trading. On strong trend days, pullbacks to the 9 EMA often find buyers, making it a natural area to look for continuation entries.
The basic setup: a stock makes a strong initial push, then pulls back toward the rising 9 EMA on decreasing volume. An entry near the EMA with a stop just below the pullback low defines your risk clearly. If volume surges into the EMA and price slices through it, the setup is invalidated — exit and reassess.
Treat the 9 EMA as a guide, not a guarantee. On choppy or low-volume days it will whipsaw repeatedly. It works best on the first one or two pullbacks of a clean trend; by the fourth or fifth test, the edge is usually gone.
